Places to visit in Borovets
Borovets is a fairly good and old winter resort but it is not a major place of interest for sightseeing. A real highlight is the Rila Monastery, which is situated nearby. It is world famous and the biggest monastery in Bulgaria. The proximity of the capital Sofia makes it possible to combine your ski vacation with visits of museums, theatre, opera, as well as with shopping and sightseeing tours. One can also visit the palace Tsarska Bistritsa, which is just 10 minutes walk from Borovets.
Another highlight in your stay in Borovets can be an excursion to Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria. It will be a perfect choice for a recovery day without skiing. It is not only known for its history and architecture but for its wine traditions, too. A unique technology for the famous Melnik wine to ripen and mature is used there. The Melnik wine is preserved in original cellars in the sand pyramids around the town.
The closest town to the resort is Samokov. It is situated at the northern foot of Rila Mountain. Iskar – the longest Bulgarian river flows through it. It is 60 km away from Sofia and just 12 km in north-western direction from Borovets. Samokov has a unique architecture and lots of old historic buildings and places for sightseeing.
Malyovitsa is a small resort 40 km away from Borovets. It is situated at the foot of Malyovitsa peak (2729 m high), which is a preferred site for alpinism and tourism. This small resort is a starting point for many tourist routes that are leading to the northwestern part of the mountain: to the Ivan Vazov chalet (7 hours), to the Ribni ezera (Fish lakes) chalet (9- 10 hours), to the Rila Monastery (6 hours) and etc.
The village of Govedartsi is another small mountain resort nearby Borovets. The village of Govedartsi is a starting point for routes to the magnificent Rila Monastery and the seven Rila Lakes. In the region of this small mountain resort you can have a walk in a beautiful pine forest, pick up forest fruits, mushrooms and herbs.
Beli Iskar is a small village situated at the foot of the Mousala peak in the Rila Mountain. Two great events shake Beli Iskar during the summer. These are the famous Rock in Rila festival and the Holiday of the Rila Zelnik (special kind of banitsa pastry).
The Seven Rila Lakes Chalet is the starting point for the tourist rout to the famous Seven Rila Lakes. The Lower Lake is situated lowest of all the seven lakes, at 2095 m above sea level. The Fish Lake is known as the shallowest of them all. The Trefoil Lake is the most irregularly shaped. The Twin Lake, The Kidney Lake, The Eye Lake and The Tear Lake are the names of the rest of the famous Rila Lakes. One can feel the grandeur of nature and the majestic beauty of the mountain at the site of the Seven Lakes.
